Refuse Collection

Routes and Schedules for the City of Muscatine's residential customers (Effective July 1, 2009)

Following are some basic guidelines to insure that your garbage can be picked up on the regular refuse collection routes.

  • "Trash can" shall mean any container with not less than a 20 gallon capacity and not more than a 40 gallon capacity, made of metal or plastic and shall be watertight. Plastic trash bags, provided they are of sufficient capacity and are at least 1 1/2 mils thick, may be used. Containers shall not exceed a loaded weight of 50 pounds.
  • Where City collections are made from alleys, refuse containers shall be placed adjacent to and in back of the property line abutting the alley.
  • Where City collections are made from streets, refuse containers shall be placed within 3 feet of the back curb line or the shoulder of the street without causing the container to be placed on any public street or sidewalk.
  • Grass clippings shall only be placed in City of Muscatine Yard Waste Bags that have the City of Muscatine logo on them. Bags are available at local retail outlets and the transfer station office. Tree limbs and trimmings from trees or shrubs shall be bundled with biodegradable sting or cord in 4-foot lengths.
  • Cardboard recycling at the curb is available to all residents who receive City of Muscatine refuse collection.
  • Household hazardous waste, such as oil-based paints, insecticides, thinners, solvents, cleaners, turpentine, furniture stripper, etc. should not be disposed of in the garbage. All materials that are considered hazardous need to be brought to the Transfer Station.
