The Equipment Services Division of the Public Works Department is located at 1459 Washington St. The garage provides preventative maintenance on 206 vehicles and pieces of equipment for the City of Muscatine. The City’s fleet includes 109 vehicles and pieces of equipment at the Public Works Department; 10 City Transit buses; 16 vehicles and pieces of equipment in the Refuse Collection/Transfer Station division; 10 vehicles and pieces of equipment in Collection & Drainage division; 25 Police vehicles; 1 vehicle in Animal Control; 17 vehicles in Building & Zoning, Engineering, Community Development/Housing and Library; 1 vehicle and 3 pieces of equipment for the Airport; and 18 vehicles and pieces of equipment in the Parks Department.
A Supervisor and 3 Vehicle Mechanic IIs staff the garage. The working hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Each year beginning at the end of November, one mechanic is on stand-by for the winter season. In the event of a snow storm requiring the Roadway Maintenance Division to work around the clock, the mechanics will split into three 12-hour shifts, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. The proposed budget for the Equipment Services Division this year 2009/2010 is $1,159,700.
Repair and maintenance covers a wide variety of equipment from lawnmowers, garbage trucks, pickup trucks, dump trucks, snow plows, salt spreaders, transit buses, squad cars and tractors and related mowing equipment. Records are kept for each piece of equipment that is worked on in the maintenance shop and these records are used when replacing equipment and vehicles. There are approximately 1,655 vehicle maintenance work orders and crisis breakdowns worked on in the maintenance garage. Planned maintenance visits per year, which includes routine servicing, brake work and major repairs total approximately 457. The total for all is approximately 2,112 per year. Public Works serves as the fueling point for all city vehicles and equipment. Miles driven by City vehicles totaled 1,180,475 in budget year 2008/2009.
Equipment Services Division participates in Public Surplus Auction to dispose of old equipment and vehicles. As vehicles and equipment are declared surplus material, they are listed on the Public Surplus website.
We are currently undergoing parking lot repairs that will also include replacing the spill replacement tanks for our underground fuel tanks. The money used for the parking lot repairs came from the federal stimulus money from the State of Iowa.
