Buildings and Grounds, a division of Public Works, is responsible for the upkeep and repair of city facilities, grounds, and equipment. The division is responsible for maintaining the following facilities and grounds:
- Art Center and Museum
- City Hall
- Library
- Public Safety Building
- Public Works
- South Fire Station
- Airport (certain maintenance functions at this location)
There are currently eight employees working for the Building and Grounds Department including the supervisor for the division, Jerry McKenzie. Three of the full-time staff members for this division maintain annual certifications for pest control. Each year staff attends classes through Building Maintenance Engineering and must test to receive certifications for boiler maintenance. Staff is also responsible for water backflow city-wide. This, too, requires continuing education and acquiring appropriate certifications. There are approximately 30 locations where backflow preventers have been installed throughout the city and must be inspected annually.
Work for this division includes, but is not limited to, janitorial, painting, plumbing, electrical, air conditioner and boiler repairs, carpentry, structural repairs, upgrading, remodeling, yard care, and clearing/salting sidewalks in the winter months.
The supervisor is the representative for the City General Contractor and must manage a work order system that is used for numerous city-wide projects. These are various maintenance projects and small capital improvement projects.
This division is also responsible for warehousing custodial supplies and copy paper for all of the city facilities. Supplies must be purchased, stored, and later delivered to each department on an as-needed basis.
One of the largest projects recently completed through the Building and Grounds division was the Geothermal HVAC project at the Public Safety Building.
