Safety Building After the line of duty death of Mike Kruse on September 14, 2002 the members of the Muscatine Fire Department decided to establish an honor guard. The Cedar Rapids Fire Department Honor Guard was a great help in getting Muscatine’s new honor guard going by providing some basic training steps, contact information to purchase honor guard equipment and providing copies of their honor guard manual. In October 2003, four members of the Muscatine Fire Department Honor Guard participated in the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial ceremonies in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Marching with several hundred other honor guard members from across the country they participated in honoring the fallen firefighters of 2002 including MFD’s Mike Kruse who died in the line of duty on September 14, 2002.The public got their first look when part of the honor guard for the first time led the fire department’s apparatus in the 4th of July parade in 2004. On August 15, 2004 the honor guard was officially unveiled to the public during the dedication ceremonies of the Muscatine Firefighters Memorial located next to the Public Safety Building. The honor guard plans on participating in the Iowa Fallen Firefighters Memorial held in June each year. Line of duty death of a member of MFD, active MFD member death while off duty, death of any retired member of MFD, death of a MFD member’s immediate family, death of a MPD member or Muscatine County Sheriff member, death of a city official or any other funeral services the honor guard is requested at are the funeral services available by the MFD honor guard. Parades, dedication ceremonies where the honor guard is requested and retirement parties for retiring MFD members are some of the other services offered.
